Beijing’s first bicycle-only road under paving

The paving work is now underway on Beijing’s first bicycle-only road. The work is expected to be completed on May 26 and the overall construction of the road is to be completed by the end of May.

At the construction site of the bicycle-only road near the Longze Subway Station in Changping District, conveyor belts and power assisting and resistance devices were installed at the entrance and exit to facilitate cyclists and ensure their safety. The road surface was paved in green for 2.5 km and in orange for 1.5 km, and the colored paving material is environmentally-friendly, anti-wearing and capable of melting snow, which can guarantee safe cycling in a snowy weather.

“The road is designed for two-way driving. There are three lanes on the road. The lanes on both sides are green with a width of 2.5 meters. The middle reversible lane is orange with a width of 1.5 meters,” introduced an official in charge, adding that the middle orange lane can reverse a direction during morning and evening rush hours.

The 6.5-kilometer-long east-west bicycle-only road starts from Huilongguan Community in Changping District and ends at Houchangcun Road in Haidian District. The enclosed road has eight entrances and exits, with a designed speed of 20 km per hour.
