A heritage park of the over 100 years old Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway will be built in the downtown of Beijing.

Now its implementation plan is under research, according to Haidian branch of Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources.

According to the route of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, the 6,020-meter-long section from Xueyuan South Road and Qinghua East Road in Beijing’s downtown will run in a tunnel to pass through the Haidian District underground.

The existing Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway line on the ground that is some nine kilometers long will be partly reserved and included into the heritage park, which will integrate heritage ruins, recreation and sports, and commercial buildings.

The Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway’s heritage park in planning will cross Haidian District’s six sub-districts and one township, namely, Beixiaguan, Beitaipingzhuang, Xueyuanlu, Zhongguancun, Qinghuayuan, Huayuanlu and Dongsheng township.

The heritage park will improve neighborhood lives in many aspects.

According to the current planning, it will add green land of over 30 hectares to serve for 310,000 residents and teachers and students of 26 communities and eight universities within one kilometer.

In addition, footpaths for jogging and walking will be built in the park.

It is leant that the idea of the heritage park is inspired by the High Line Park at Manhattan, New York city.

The old Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway, under the supervision of railway engineer Zhan Tianyou, started construction in 1905 and was put into operation in 1909.

It is the first railway line independently designed, built and operated by the Chinese.

A number of innovative engineering approaches were adopted in the construction of the railway such as "shaft excavation" and "Y-shaped routes" on mountains.

The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high speed railway under construction is to serve for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Upon its completion, the travel time between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the co-host cities for Beijing 2022 will be about 50 minutes.
