At Ruyi Community of Gucheng Subdistrict of Shijingshan District of Beijing, residents have been enjoying a more convenient life long-awaited, since newly-installed elevators were put into use at the beginning of 2019, a gift in the new year.
“In the past, I had to rest for several times when I was climbing stairs to my home on the fourth floor after shopping for groceries. Now I just have to press buttons of an elevator and then I arrive at home,” a 72-year-old resident surnamed Liu said excitedly. Living alone, he used to avoid going outside too frequently for his difficulties in climbing stairs.
Built in 16 years before, the Ruyi Community has four six-storey residential buildings where 257 households live, most of whom are over 60 years old. With the aging of the residents and growing desire for better living conditions, the owner company of the community decided to install elevators so as to facilitate residents’ outgoes.
After eight and a half months of construction, a total of 19 elevators were installed and put into use.
The installation and operation of elevators are free to residents as most of them are the owner company’s old employees and their families.
“This is the best New Year gift I have ever received,” said Liu, who will no longer worry about going out for shopping and be able to go out for a walk frequently.
