From 2017 to 2018, a project of relocating overhead electricity cables underground was conducted on 375 roads with a total length of 225 kilometers in downtown Beijing.

The project has 419 kilometers of overhead electricity cables removed and 9,741 street lamps installed, including the 5,314 ones on 218 lamp-free road sections.

Owing to the project, the average road surface illuminance in Beijing has increased from less than 5 Lux to 20 Lux and the uniformity of road surface illuminance has increased from less than 0.1 to 0.4, which has greatly improved the lighting level of the central areas in the city. The installation of 5,314 street lamps on lamp-free road sections satisfies the lighting needs at passageways, narrow lanes and public toilets in hutongs.
