Xicheng relocates last wholesale market

Guanyuan wholesale market closed permanently at 19:00 on September 28, 2018, which is the last closed regional wholesale market in Beijing’s Xicheng district, according to Xinhua News Agency.

In the future, this area will be forged into a demonstration area of Beijing financial sci-tech innovation and professional service technology innovation. Xicheng district, taking advantages of its location, will foster emerging finance businesses.

The 30,000-square meter-Guanyuan wholesale market housing over 1,000 stalls opened operation in 1998.

On the morning of September 28, its commercial tenants were making the last sale and many residents were flocking at the daily necessities areas to select pots and pans and bits of thread and needle.

Zhanlan Road area was once the most concentrated area of regional small commodity wholesale markets in Beijing. Among them, Wantong market closed on August 31, 2017; Tianyi market followed the step on September 15 the same year; the “wholesale markets around Beijing Zoo” were relocated on November 30, 2017.

With the close of Guanyuan market, Xicheng district will completely bid farewell to regional wholesale markets.

An official of Xicheng District Commission of Commerce said, in the layout of Xicheng district’s life service industries, fully taking residents’ needs of buying daily articles into consideration, Xicheng has built accumulated 30 residents life service centers in the past three years, and achieved the aim of building at least a life service center per square kilometer in residential areas, with a full coverage of basic commercial service functions in communities.
