In the past ten years, over 9,100 sports events, performances and high-end exhibitions, drawing more than 500 million visitors, have been held at Beijing’s Olympic functional area which will be forged into a globally influential gathering place of international exchange activities, according to Beijing’s Chaoyang district.
As the core zone and main bearing zone of the 29th Summer Olympic Games and the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the Olympic functional area will be positioned as an“international exchange connecting window, world cultural communication platform and national sports leisure center”.
After the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing Olympic Park has hosted over 1,130 major international events, including APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, IAAF World Championships in Athletics and so on.
The National Stadium, also known as Bird’s Nest, has held more than 300 various performances. The “Dingmei-Sightseeing Corridor” at the fifth floor of the Bird’s Nest opened to the public in 2017, which has made the National Stadium the first one to wholly open its roof in the world.
The China National Convention Center, holding various exhibitions, has become the first one in China to draft the international standard of convention and exhibition industry and also the first to complete the pilot of standardization of the national service industry.
Besides the sports venues and convention and exhibition centers, some national major cultural projects have been settled down in succession at Beijing Olympic Park.
For example, the newly built Beijing Olympic Tower is one of the first batch of towers that have been permitted to permanently hang the Olympic rings. National Centre of Chinese Traditional Culture has entered the exhibition phase.
The National Art Museum of China, China National Arts and Crafts Museum (Intangible cultural heritage exhibition hall) and National Science and Technology Communication Center will settle down soon.
The National Speed Skating Hall has begun construction and the Winter Olympic Village has laid a foundation. In addition, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s permanent office has settled at the Olympic Park.
The Olympic Park has seen over million visitors in the past ten years, benefiting about 50 million visitors on average per year.
The Park’s “Beach Theme Park” transformed from the beach area of the Beach Volleyball Court, has greeted accumulated 1.43 million visitors.
