The first shield section of Beijing’s New Airport Line got through in both directions on the morning of August 6, 2018, as the nose of a shield tunneling machine with a diameter of 8.8 meters slowly “broke the wall” of the reception shaft at the southern side of the Cigezhuang Station of the Line, which created favorable conditions for the next track-laying work.
The first get-through shield section is 2,780 meters long, and took ten months during which many risk sources and great difficulty were encountered as the shield tunneling machine under crossed Xinfeng River, Xinfeng River Bridge, the South Sixth Ring Road and other important buildings, according to the project’s construction party, Beijing Municipal Road & Bridge Group.
It is learnt that the shield tunneling machine started work at the right line of the shield section on September 15, 2017 and got it through in February; the tunneling of the left line began in April and finished in August.
Beijing’s New Airport Line will be an important line to connect city proper with the new airport in the future.
Three stations, namely, North Terminal Station of the New Airport, Cigezhuang Station and Caoqiao Station are set up along its first phase project that is 41.4 kilometers long.
The New Airport Line with a design speed of 160 kilometers per hour is the fastest urban rail transit line in China so far, and is to go on trial run in 2019.
