I’m an English student in Beijing Foreign Studies University and last year I applied for a voluntary work for Pyeong Chang 2018 Winter Olympics. I got the job. Working as a team leader volunteers of Beijing Capital Foreign Languages Volunteer Association for the Winter Olympics in South Korea has been a turning point in my life. I have experienced so much and here are my thoughts as I have finished the work a few days ago.

Passion for Olympics

First of all, with the experience in a Winter Olympics already, it made me feel that I have an intellectual foundation and better preparation for the next 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Definitely I believe that I’ll serve the next Winter Olympics in my home city.

It’s lucky for me to have a group of passionate group members in Korea. I have great passion for sports and foreign languages. As a sports fan, I’ve attended many sports games, and it’s my first time to be in Winter Olympics. Not only did meeting new people give me happiness; it also gave me the inspiration to chase Olympics. I really wanted to get close to people from various countries, and I like to learn different culture and know about recent Winter Olympics from organizers, such as Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014. I hope to know more about them, and to become friends with people from various countries.

As I’ve studied in Beijing Foreign Studies University as an English major, and taught myself Hindi, Português, French. I’m an ordinary man in Korea, as we know most of Korean people cannot understand English. I’ve found it hard to talk with them, translation app is best in communication. In the meantime, body language is important as well.

Although it was hard at first, this experience became a precious chance to develop my skills and I can say without a doubt that I enjoyed learning Korean. This time, what I desired to learn was Korean, but next time, I could be passionate about learning something else. So, I’ll continue to give every opportunity and my best effort for whatever I learn.

Another aspect I enjoyed, was being able to see and learn the details behind the fancy Olympic Games. Luckily, I had chances to watch some of the sports at the Olympic & Paralympic Games in person.

I felt proud of athletes during games, and this kind of struggle spirit strive me, and make me feel better and better. In particular, Witnessing Da Jingwu standing in victory ceremony, lots of Chinese from China , volunteers, tourists were all excited. We cheer for a loud voice to celebrate. In Paralympic games, I’ve watched wheelchair curling in Gangneung venue, and witnessed the gold medal for Chinese players. I was excited with tension, singing Chinese National Anthem and waving Chinese flag.

Friends Forever

Finally, the most important thing to me from this whole experience is that I met lots of great friends that I will remember forever. Whether it is staying in hotels, eating or working together – it was the best time for me and I enjoyed every minute of it. Although we were totally different, taking the time to know one another made us connected to them. It was nice to hear their stories and hear their heartfelt advice from worldwide. We have same passion, knowing the different culture from all over the world.

Many friends want to join Beijing 2022 Olympics as volunteers. I leave my contact information, in order to tell them latest recruitment news and I’m sure they will be a good voice of China.

I also became friendly with the people I worked together with. The age did not matter at all. It gave me the confidence to decide that I could be friends with whoever I want.

As well as the thousands of passionate crews that are hard at work to make an event like this happen along side the professionals, there are also the people who were cheering us in their homes who are the hidden treasure that make the Olympics work. Because Pyeong Chang hosted a Winter Games, It was sometimes difficult to work in the cold weather, so it’s even more impressive that everyone was able to carry out their assignment. Without all these people we would not have been as successful as we were. I appreciate all of the support and cheering for everyone in the Olympic games.

I was grateful for being able to get along with many people regardless of their age, gender, or nationality. It was such a valuable time. I was really sad to saying goodbye to them, even before the Olympics were over. I loved them sincerely.

Farewell

When my days in Pyeong Chang were over, it was really hard to say goodbye to everyone and leave the place that I had become so fond of. I tried not to cry but I couldn’t help it – I couldn't imagine leaving my friends. I know we can keep in touch, but I knew it would be different. As the old saying goes: ”all good things come to an end.”The time I spent here felt like a dream. I was honored to participate in this big event, meet wonderful people and experience so much. While I was here, I had lots of thoughts and feelings that I've never experienced.

I am grateful to everyone I met along the way. It was a once in a lifetime experience. I love you my friends. Let's keep in touch! See you in Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
