More than 60 parents, children and artists painted vivid cartoon graffiti on walls, corners, gates and grounds at the Sijiyuan Community of Babaoshan Subdistrict of Shijingshan District in Beijing on the afternoon of December 9, 2017.
Built in 1987, the Sijiyuan Community is a typical old community with its shabby and dirty walls posted with many leaflets and advertisements. Not long ago, the Babaoshan subdistrict began to improve the dirty, disorderly and bad environment and dismantle illegal buildings in the community and residents put forward the idea of beautifying their homes to make the community more beautiful.
“There are many elders and children in the community. However, the community lacks vitality in the living environment, so we organized this parent-child graffiti activity to hope rich colors can bring more vitality to the community and give people hope,” Guo Guiyun, Party secretary of the community, said. “We’d like to invite residents to build the community’s environment with us and improve the community’s landscapes with their own wisdom and efforts. This activity can promote residents’ participation in community self-governance, enhance their sense of ownership.”
The organizing body of this activity invited a professional design team composed of young artists from eight fine arts academies. Dividing the community into four parts with the themes of “spring, summer, autumn and winter, they designed the old walls, corners, gates and grounds with the elements favored by residents and children like cartoon animals, ice and snow worlds and Winter Olympic sports. Those graffiti will not only beautify the community’s environment and enrich the life of residents but also create a delightful landmark representing harmony and goodness in the neighborhood of the community.
A resident surnamed Zhang praised the graffiti activity, “This activity is really good for it gives us an opportunity to work and experience graffiti with our children and helps beautify the environment around us. It is really refreshing when we come home and see the colorful community after work every day.”
