Beijing will complete the improvement and rectification of footpaths and bike paths of 600 kilometers mainly including connecting roads between the 2nd Ring Road and the 4th Ring Road and busy roads like Chaoyang Road and Chaoyang North Road by the end of December in 2017. At the same time, the city is also studying linking its regular bikeways with high speed cycling ways to realize quick commuting by bike and a cycling expressway from Tiantongyuan to Zhongguancun is expected to be under construction next year, according to Beijing municipal transport authority.
Beijing is planning the first high speed cycling way, which connects Tiantongyuan, Shangdi and Zhongguancun and stretches about nine kilometers. The construction of the cycling way is expected to start next year. The cycling way would be a dual road partly on the ground and partly elevated and with a width of five to seven meters.
An official with the road administration department introduced that Beijing is studying connecting regular bike paths with cycling expressways based on experience from foreign cities like Copenhagen. Besides, the way will also be equipped with supporting facilities related with cycling like automatic tyre selling machines, lighting and rubbish bins.
According to the transport planning of Beijing during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the city will improve the footpaths and cycling ways of 3,200 kilometers.
