On August 4, the “Golden Steering Wheel Award” of Beijing Public Transport Group was given to the 120 bus drivers, who have driven safely for at least 800,000 km each.
“It is very difficult to win the “Golden Steering Wheel Award” and the winners have really worked at their post for a lifetime,” said Yang Bin, manager of the security department of Beijing Public Transport Group.
The 120 bus drivers were strictly selected from the city’s more than 30,000 drivers of 864 conventional bus lines. In addition to a 100 grams of gold steering wheel with the purity of Au99.9, each of them will receive a cash reward of 15,000 yuan ($ 2,232).
It is learned that owing to everyone’s hard work, this year the passenger accidents on buses decreased by 30 percent in Beijing. Yang Bin introduced that they are also working on improving the security hardware on buses so as to ensure a safety driving. Currently, an active safety identification system and a driver abnormal behavior interpretation system are being tested on more than 80 buses of the bus lines 345 and 919. The former system has the early warning function which can alarm a few seconds in advance when the bus is too close to cars, and the latter system can help drivers to get rid of bad habits by capturing, alarming and reporting their abnormal behaviors like single-handing the steering wheel for more than 10 seconds and closing eyes for more than five or six seconds.
