On the early morning of July 13, the big signboard of Tianyi Market at Fuchengmen was slowly removed by crane jibs and workers, which marks the countdown has begun for closing the largest small wares wholesale and retail market in Beijing.

It is learned that Tianyi Market will be officially closed on September 16 and at present more than 95 percent of businesses have signed a contract cancellation agreement with the market.

As the largest small wares wholesale and retail market in Beijing, Tianyi Market was opened in 1992 and has more than 4,650 booths which sell more than 130,000 kinds of commodities from all over the country.

“The goods sold at Tianyi Market are really rich, including pots and pans, stationery, children’s toys, etc. You can buy almost everything you need here. Before the rise of online shopping, there are a large number of customers here every day,” a citizen surnamed Li recalled the scene of the market in his childhood, who came to shop at the closing market.

At the end of 2015, the branch of Tianyi Market at Di’anmen was closed after its opening for 14 years.
