In Beijing, there is a place called “Sweet Potato Community” at the basement 2 of No. 19 Building of Anyuanbeili Community in Chaoyang District. Covering an area of more than 560 square meters, this underground community is bright with fresh air and various facilities.

The “Sweet Potato Community” was transformed from a dark and humid basement by Yayuncun Subdistrict in 2015, and now it has become an exchange and friendship platform for the residents of Anyuanbeili Community.

Installed with a fresh air system, the “Sweet Potato Community” is divided into several functional areas, including the shared living room in the middle for meeting, reading and resting free of charge, and other areas around the living room like the lamp reading room, library, fitness room, shared toy room, private cinema, neighborhood tea bar and shared classroom, which serve for community residents at a small charge. Zhou Ke, CEO of “Sweet Potato Community”, introduced that “Sweet Potato Community” is committed to helping community residents to use their skills to provide services for the community to create equal, warm and fun sharing culture and neighborhood relationship.

Since the official operation in March 2016, the “Sweet Potato Community” has attracted many residents of Anyuanbeili Community to meet, sing opera, write homework, learn the game of go, have a birthday party, do fitness, watch movies or hold a parent-child party there. Residents donated tea, books and posters to the “Sweet Potato Community”, and many of them got to know each other through sharing and giving there. Currently, the neighborhood tea bar has received the tea donated by more than 40 residents, and the library has received more than 200 donated books. Besides, activities are also held from time to time to attract young people to participate in and give volunteer services in the “Sweet Potato Community”.

The concept of “Sweet Potato Community” is to turn a community into shared space, proposed by designer Zhou Zishu in 2014. It has won Design for Asia Award in 2016.
