Last year 180 designated medical institutions in Beijing’s 16 districts provided free pit and fissure sealant for over 370,000 children, according to Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning.
Oral health plays an important role in children’s healthy growth. Oral epidemiological survey shows that the dental caries incidence of permanent teeth of children aged 12 was high in Beijing in 1990s. The municipal government has begun to offer special fund to promote free pit and fissure sealant among children to prevent dental caries since 2005. Beijing has kept a low incidence of dental caries among children for 11 consecutive years from 2005 to 2016. The average number of decayed tooth of children aged 12 is less than 0.6, lower than the standard of World Health Organization (1.0).
To reduce the dental caries incidence of deciduous teeth among children, Beijing started to apply fluoride froth to the tooth surface of children aged between three and six free of charge since 2011 and the service has benefited 2.71 million children. Last year 114 designated medical institutions in Beijing offered oral cavity examination for over 400,000 preschool children and free fluoridization of tooth surface for over 590,000 children. The sentinel monitoring data for five consecutive years show that the rising dental caries incidence of deciduous teeth has been curbed. Besides offering free fluoridization of tooth surface, Beijing also carries out oral cavity health education. The percentage of treatment for deciduous dental caries of children aged five has risen from 19.3 percent in 2011 to 24.8 percent in 2016, and the oral cavity health of children has been greatly improved in Beijing.
