New changes in old overpass areas
The second and third ring roads are among the busiest roads in Beijing, a city featuring a circular and radial distribution road network. The nodes in the network around the second and third ring roads are dotted with a number of overpasses. The spaces under these overpasses are often left unused except performing some public functions like serving as parking lots for buses and emergency equipment for road maintenance.
A manager of Beijing Municipal Road & Bridge Group – the management unit of the overpasses around the second and third ring roads introduced that the group had begun to study the establishment of electric car rental business in Beijing together with Shou Qi Group in 2015.
It is learned that 40 to 50 car rental stations are planned to be set up under overpasses around the second and third ring roads. Shou Qi Group expressed that currently there are over 1,000 electric cars for rental in Beijing and the rental fee is one yuan per hour + 0.1 yuan per minute and people can check the information on rental stations through its Gofun APP.
2,000 cars to enter rental market
According to the manager of Beijing Municipal Road & Bridge Group, the spaces under the overpasses around the second and third ring roads are perfect places for electric car rental stations. He introduced that these areas are like fragmented parking lots that are quite convenient for car rental.
“But not every space under overpasses around the second and third ring roads will be used for car rental,” said him. Before starting a car rental business, they would take into account of the space and surrounding traffics to avoid new traffic pressure for the main and side roads of the ring roads and ask for approval of transportation administration departments.
According to the cooperation agreement between Beijing Municipal Road & Bridge Group and Shou Qi Group, 2,000 electric cars will be put into rental market this year and another 3,000 cars will enter the market in 2018. The spaces under overpasses around the second and third ring roads will be altered to serve as car rental stations and the alteration measures for further upgrading are to be studied.
Recharging posts to be installed
The manager also revealed that recharging posts will be installed in the future to offer recharging services to citizens at places under overpasses if condition permits. What’s more, important nodes in the network around the second and third ring roads will also be equipped with recharging posts to serve new energy car owners.
