The 11th 2017 Beginning of Spring Cultural Festival of Jianguomen subdistrict kicked off at Zhaojialou Restaurant in Chaoyang district of Beijing on December 21, the day of the Winter Solstice of 2016. The locals armed police soldier and business representatives came together at the restaurant to celebrate the arrival of Winter Solstice.

Winter Solstice, the 22nd solar term of the year, begins this year on Dec 21, 2016. On this day, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest day and the longest night in the year, as the sun shines directly at the Tropic of Capricorn. From then on, the days become longer and the nights become shorter.

Meanwhile, Winter Solstice is also an important traditional festival in China with a history of over 2,500 years. As early as Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-256BC), people worshipped the gods on the Winter Solstice, which was also the first day of the new year. In Beijing, there is a saying that goes “Have dumplings on the day of Winter Solstice and noodles on the day of Summer Solstice”.

It is learned that this year the festival starts from the day of Winter Solstice and ends on the Tomb Sweeping Day. During the event, Jianguomen subdistrict will hold a series of folk cultural activities for people to experience the charm of farming culture, appreciate the fun of traditional folk, and enjoy the blessing and warmth in the cold winter.
