A miniature international horticultural exposition opened at the Branch School of Shijia Primary on October 31, 2016 to welcome the Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition 2019. The school’s 1,500 students were invited to be the ambassadors for the Beijing Expo 2019 while the school was awarded as the first campus promotion base for the “Horticultural life classroom”, a large-scale welfare campaign launched by Beijing World Horticultural Expo Coordination Bureau.
“Children are the future of the country and one of the sub-themes of Beijing Expo 2019 is “education and future”. Today the activities and classes of gardening can teach students knowledge and show them the beauty of horticulture so as to improve their comprehensive quality and encourage them to develop in an all-round way,” said Ye Dahua, deputy director of Beijing World Horticultural Expo Coordination Bureau.
Gao Manhong, president of the Branch School of Shijia Primary, said that the school has a mature horticultural curriculum which has laid a good foundation for the miniature international horticultural exposition. As the first campus promotion base for the “Horticultural life classroom”, the school will play its role to spread the horticultural knowledge to the surrounding residents and promote the concepts of Beijing Expo 2019.
The one-day miniature international horticultural exposition had a rich atmosphere of Beijing Expo 2019 created by the themed gardening landscapes in the corridors and posters of the knowledge about Beijing Expo 2019. A dozen of various activities and classes of “gardening and science” were provided for students to learn and interact. During the activities, students were not only participants, but also the organizers and instructors.
The experience activities were so fun that they attracted many students to take part in, such as the game “scent of a person” telling a person’s characteristics by his or her preference for a scent, drawing a visiting map for the miniature expo, hand-making flower cakes, as well as displaying and sharing home-made gardening products. Students expressed that they are very fond of such activities and look forward to the Beijing Expo 2019 with more colorful gardening products.
In addition, “Tu Yoyo small laboratory” was inaugurated at the Branch School of Shijia Primary during the activity, where students will learn in-depth knowledge of Chinese herbal medicine and experience the horticultural charm by planting Chinese medicinal herbs under the guidance and help of scientific researchers.
The widely popular welfare campaign “Horticultural life classroom” has harvested a good reputation for its interesting experience activities such as “horticulture therapy”, “parent-child gardening”, “gardening in the food” and “drawing flowers”. In the future, the activities will continue to be held free of charge for citizens. People can follow the WeChat account “Happy Life Class” or call 010-84186986 for more details.
