April 28, the dusk of Shichahai saw a launching ceremony of the first “Drawing Beijing—World Artists Illustrate Beijing” event that marked the official start of ”Beijing Time” for the ten visiting cartoonists from seven countries.

The ten western comic artists drew a cartoon as a gift to the city of Beijing at the opening ceremony.

For the following days until May 3, they are expected to feel the city’s charm in person during their visit to the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Yonghegong Lama Temple, the Confucian Temple and some other distinctive spots such as the Olympic Center, National Center for the Performing Arts and the 798 Art Zone.

For one of the several days on the journey of Beijing, each of the ten western artists will be paired with one Chinese cartoonist invited by the Qianlong.com. They will depict this city together in colors and lines by brushes from either foreign or local perspectives.

“The diversities between our cultures and the ways we see and think will all extremely enrich the sources for creating a work, and continuously broaden creative horizon of ours,” said Thierry • Martinet, a French comic artist as the representative of visiting cartoonists at the opening.

Mr. Pang Bangben, a well-known Chinese cartoonist stated at the opening ceremony that original cartoon is one of the prime powers to lead the contemporary fashion tide. He hoped Chinese and foreign cartoonists can join hands to make contributions to the prosperity of the comic art.

Foreign embassy officials of the invited artists’ countries also attended the event. The Press and Cultural Counselor to the Beijing based Finland Embassy, Mr. Mikko Puustinen spoke highly about the event as a fantastic idea to interpret the magnificence and fast development of Beijing through views of comic artists. He was proud that Hannu• Lukkarine, a famous artiest of Finland is invited.

“Beijing is a magnificent city with rich culture. So there are a lot of ways to express the city, but with comic this is the first time. To me, comics is a hilarious art, so from here I see today the creators of comics must be hilarious too, and you have proved you are right today, It was not often seen that the city was expressed in the form of comics. I always think those who appreciate comics must be good people… So thank you once again so much for bringing your kindness and works to Beijing, ” Yan Liqiang, deputy head of the Information Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality said at the opening ceremony, adding that the “1+1” pairing of Chinese-foreign artists is a good form of cultural exchange. It is interactions that make works impressive.
